Big World, Tiny Creatures
We will create dioramas of our own corner of this big Earth using various painting and drawing media. Kids will tour the Earthlings exhibition to take inspiration from the sculptural works that combine humans and animals. Back in Art Lab, we will build creatures both real and imagined to populate our scenes with two and three-dimensional figures. Found objects, collage, and paper pop-ups will fill worlds of our own creation.
Drawing inspiration from the seven contemporary artists in Earthlings we will use geographical maps of the unique places these artists call home. The graphic lines, shapes and place names will be the starting point to our large and colourful collage artworks. We will also design Hay ch qa’ (thank you) cards for friends and family to share.
We will learn about the local petroglyphs carved over 1,000 years ago by First Nations peoples and explore the exciting Lascaux cave paintings in France to inspire our own prehistoric drawings and paintings of large animals. Wolf, fish, horse, bear and bird will be drawn and painted using chalk pastels and paint on rumpled brown packing paper. We will cover the walls and scrape and carve drawings on chalk covered rocks to add to our cave installation in Art Lab!
